You may have this Power Rangers short film from the other day. It was the version not suitable for your children’s eyes and was meant for the kids that used to watch the show and are now all grown up.
Well, it looks like a legal battle is brewing over the rights of filmmakers to make fan videos based on copyrighted works of others.
The 14-minute Power Rangers short was created by music video director, Joseph Kahn, who posted the short to YouTube last night. The short, with no surprise, went viral.
Joseph Kahn says that he’s being “harassed” by Haim Saban, who owns the rights to the franchise and is jointly producing his own Power Rangers feature film with Lionsgate.
The short film was produced by Jil Hardin and Adi Shankar, who was an executive producer on Lone Survivor and A Walk Among The Tombstones. The film was co-written by Kahn, Dutch Southern, and star of the short James Van Der Beek. The film also stars Katie Sackhoff.
The team posted the short on YouTube and Vimeo. It currently still lives on YouTube, where it has 6.5 million views. Vimeo took the video down today after receiving a complaint from Saban Brands.
Vimeo told Kahn in an email, “Vimeo is the host for your videos, and as a host for user-generated content we are fully compliant with the notice and takedown provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. It looks like your video was removed due to a copyright infringement claim by: Tim Quinlan, SCG Power Rangers LLC.”
