Jason Jones announced on Twitter Tuesday that he is leaving his correspondent position on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show after nearly 10 years. Jones did not specify when his final show of the year will air.
Jones wrote that he worked on “one of the greatest TV shows of all time” for 9 1/2 years, but it is time for him to leave. He also announced that he would be making “another great show” that will appear on TBS, which is home to Family Guy, The Big Bang Theory, and more. He said he is “ecstatic.”
Jones and his wife Samantha Bee, who is also a Daily Show correspondent, are set to be executive producers of the comedy about a family who set out on a road trip that quickly takes a turn for the worst. The show is reportedly based on the couple’s own getaways, and it is “an honest and darkly comedic look at family.” The couple has been promised a 10-episode run from TBS for the untitled comedy in which Jones plays an “unfiltered dad” named Nate.
Although Bee is working with Jones on the new sitcom, Comedy Central confirmed that Bee will remain as a correspondent on The Daily Show. Bee has been on the show since 2003, two years longer than her husband.
The news of Jones’ exit comes just after the show’s host, Jon Stewart, announced his leave after working on the show for 16 years. He could be leaving as early as July, according to eonline.com. Jones’ exit also shuts down the swirling rumors that he would replace Stewart as host.
Beyond The Daily Show, Jones has appeared in the comedies Pitch Perfect, starring Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow, and The Switch, starring Jason Bateman and Jennifer Anniston. Recently, he appeared in the crime comedy The Art of the Steal, starring Kurt Russell.
