Variety reports that Jessica Chastain will join Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron in Universal’s spinoff of Snow White and the Huntsman, titled simply The Huntsman. Emily Blunt will also join the film’s cast, alongside returning actor Nick Frost, who will reprise his role as a dwarf Nion. The film will be directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (who was honored with an Academy Award in Visual Effects for his work on the original film), produced by Joe Roth and executive produced by Palak Patel. The Huntsman is set to be released in 2016.
The screenplay will be written by Frank Darabont, who was initially set to direct before bowing out earlier this year as reported by Deadline, with earlier drafts produced by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos.
Plot details remain vague at this point, beyond revelations in the film that detail how the fates of two main characters, Huntsman Eric (Hemsworth) and Ravenna (Theron), intersected before they met Snow White. Details on Chastain’s character also remain minimal.
Chastain first gained international attention for her showy yet meaty role in the 2011 film The Help, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. She has since been covering the waterfront in her film roles, finishing out 2014 with a range of performances in big-budget blockbusters such as Interstellar as well as smaller independent films such as A Most Violent Year and Miss Julie.
She will next appear in Crimson Peak, to be directed by Guillermo Del Toro and released in October, and Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which will bow in November.
Chastain is repped by CAA, Mosaic and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller.
