A newly published photo shows the future actor and the future king posing together at Eton.
Perhaps an Oscar will warrant a phone call from an old friend? A newly published photo shows Best Actor winner Eddie Redmayne posing with Prince William at their English preparatory school in 2000.
The Telegraph in the UK published the picture on Monday morning, mere hours after Redmayne took home the United States’ top acting honor for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Redmayne and the future Duke of Cambridge are pictured among the group of “Pop,” the posh school’s group of elected prefects.
Redmayne and Prince William also played on the same rugby team during their school days. Redmayne has recalled, “I always felt slightly sorry for Will because everyone wanted to tackle the future King of England. He took all the hits.” He also remembered learning to distrust the press during those years, as “They’d say William was doing something somewhere and I knew he wasn’t, because we were both in double French.”
Redmayne admitted he hadn’t spoken to William since their graduation but felt he was a “lovely man.”
Two years after the photo was taken, Redmayne began his professional acting career on the Globe Theatre’s stage in a production of Twelfth Night. He swept many major awards for The Theory of Everything this year, including England’s BAFTAs. The BAFTAs are one of Prince William’s patronages, but the Duke of Cambridge did not attend the ceremony, missing the opportunity for a school reunion.
