Kristen Stewart makes history as the first American actress to win a Cesar

Kristen Stewart won a César, equivalent to an Oscar, at the 40th César Film Awards and became the first American actress to win France’s award.  Her nomination alone made her the first American woman to be in the running for an award in nearly 30 years. She won Best Supporting Actress for her role alongside Juliette Binoche in Clouds of Sils Maria, a psychological drama.

The Twilight star was covering her mouth and wearing a stunned expression upon receiving the award. She was so nervous to make her acceptance speech that she said, “I can’t even move my hands.” She received a visible thumbs up from Binoche,  took a deep breath and proceeded by thanking a few people in French.

Clouds of Sils Maria may have helped Stewart make history, but it was not the stand-out film of the night. Timbuktu, which also received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film, won Best Picture and racked up seven César awards in total, only losing in one category. Timbuktu is a portrayal of northern Mali under extremist control. The film with the most nominations of the night, the biopic on fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent Saint-Laurent, only picked up one award: Best Costumes.

Other familiar Hollywood faces attended the event at the Theatre de Chatelet in Paris. Marion Cotillard, who will appear at the Oscars on Sunday, Sean Penn and Charlize Theron were also reportedly in the crowd.

Kristen Stewart is best known for her role as Bella in The Twilight Saga in the United States. She is also known for her role as Snow White in the 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman. Recently, she played Lydia in the Oscar-nominated film Still Alice. She also secured the role of Sophie in the upcoming drama Anesthesia. IMDb states that she will star in two more films that are currently in post-production.
