Mo'Nique states that her original quote about being blackballed from Hollywood was misconstrued, and she's continuing to get offers for work.
Mo’Nique made headlines this week for telling The Hollywood Reporter that her lack of work since winning Best Supporting Actress for 2010’s Precious is the result of being “blackballed” from Hollywood by director Lee Daniels. After Daniels denied the 47-year-old actress’ claims and revealed that she merely “pissed a lot of people off,” Mo’Nique admitted to ET that her original quote may have been misconstrued.
In her original interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mo’Nique claimed that Daniels outright told her she had been blackballed, and when she asked why, he merely stated that it was because she “didn’t play the game” and refused to give her any further response. When THR asked Daniels for his side of the story, the director denied having told the comedian outright that she was blackballed form the Hollywood community, but did admit that her demands through Precious soured her relationship with a lot of people in the industry.
Mo’Nique then revealed that Daniels had promised her several roles in his projects which eventually went to Oprah Winfrey, and went on the offensive against those who say she is hard to work with.
“Whoever those people are who say, ‘Mo’Nique is difficult,’ those people are either heartless, ruthless or treat people like they’re worthless. And that’s unacceptable,” she stated. “You don’t let people mistreat you. You stand up for what’s right.”
When ET asked Mo’Nique about the controversial THR interview, she denied having said that she was blacklisted, and claims that her lack of work in recent years has been entirely her decision.
“The calls didn’t stop coming once I won the award, the scripts didn’t stop coming,” she said. “But what did happen was the calls and the scripts that were coming and the offers that were being made was as if I had just gotten to Hollywood off the Greyhound bus. And I was like, ‘I can’t accept that.'”
Daniels told ET’s Nischelle Turner at the Uptown Pre-Oscar Gala in Los Angeles on Thursday night that even though Mo’nique “pissed a lot of people off” because she was making two many demands, he is still willing to work with her again.
“I’m her friend and I love her and I want to work her,” said Daniels. “Maybe something will come along. Hopefully something will come along — I mean, she was fabulous in [Precious], wasn’t she?”
