Rapper and weed enthusiast Afroman, who achieved notoriety in the 2000s with his cheeky ode to messing up on marijuana, “Because I Got High,” has had several of his upcoming tour dates cancelled after video of him knocking out an overexcited female fan went viral.
Afroman unloaded on the young woman during a performance in Biloxi Mississippi, after she jumped up behind him to dance while he was onstage. The video of the incident is difficult to watch, as the startled and angry performer connected with a right-handed punch to the fan’s face, and continued performing even after she hit the stage floor. Police were called and eventually stopped the show, booking Afroman for assault.
Several of the venues where the rapper was scheduled to perform have cancelled his dates, including Ziggy’s By the Sea in Wilmington, NC, whose management stresses that their audience is heavily Christian-influenced and would not tolerate a performer displaying violence against women, and Park Street Saloon in Hilliard, OH, which cancelled the performance only two minutes after viewing the video footage.
Afroman did take the stage in Georgia on Wednesday night, insisting that the venue had excellent security in place and a good time was had by all.
During an interview with TMZ Live, the rapper admitted his intention to get help for his anger issues, and expressed remorse for his actions, but believed that blame for the incident should be shared with the victim as well as with a heckler who exacerbated the situation.
Apparently this recent altercation is not Afroman’s first angry encounter with a fan – while playing a concert in Cincinnati at the end of 2014, he physically tossed a fan offstage.
