A manuscript by the late author Theodor Geisel, better known to readers as Dr. Seuss, was recently found and will be published this July.
Random House Children’s Books announced that they will be publishing the book entitled What Pet Should I Get? on July 28th, 2015. They also have plans for two additional books from the materials found in Theodor’s home in 2013.
His widow, Audrey Geisel, found a box filled with pages of texts and sketches that was set aside shortly after the author’s death in 1991.
Audrey said, “While undeniably special, it is not surprising to me that we found this because Ted always worked on multiple projects and started new things all the time—he was constantly writing and drawing and coming up with ideas for new stories.”
It is likely that What Pet Should I Get? was written somewhere in between 1958 and 1962 since it features the same brother and sister who are in his book One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish that was published in 1960.
This year marks the 25 year anniversary of the publication of Geisel’s previously thought to be final book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
Barbara Marcus, President and Publisher of Random House Children’s Books, had this to say, “To be able to share this newly discovered Dr. Seuss book that was created during a most prolific period in his career marks a special moment in children’s book publishing.”
Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated 45 books during his lifetime and his books have sold more than 650 million copies.
This is not the first manuscript found recently. Last month, Harper Lee, author of To Kill A Mockingbird, found a manuscript for a prequel novel to her famous book. The prequel will be entitled Go Set a Watchman and will also be released this July from a division of HarperCollins.
