After months of speculation Neill Blomkamp has confirmed that a new Alien movie will be his next project. Previous social media posts from Blomkamp seemed to indicate that his Alien ideas would not become real any time soon. However, the news that the vision had become a reality was confirmed today via the director’s Instagram page.
Blomkamp revealed concept art in January for what he called a secret passion project that would be set in the world of the sci-fi horror classic Alien, by Ridley Scott. Earlier in February he indicated that the film had become a real possibility.
20th Century Fox is still making Prometheus 2 with original Alien creator Ridley Scott. The new Alien movie is separate from this project. It is unclear at this point whether Alien veteran star Sigourney Weaver will still be involved with the movie. However, she told MTV earlier this week that she would be open to starring in the film if someone as talented as Blomkamp was to be directing it.
Insiders report that the new Alien will take place years after the Prometheus sequel. Prometheus, which was also distributed by 20th Century Fox, was “loosely based” on the Alien franchise, earning over $400 million worldwide.
The as-yet untitled film will be produced by Ridley Scott/Scott Free. Blomkamp is director of District 9, as well as the upcoming Chappie. He did not elaborate on the new project, saying he wanted to focus on Chappie until that film came out, then Alien. Chappie is the story of a police droid who gains the ability to think independently. It is due out March 6.
