The RootMetrics report indicated that the gulf between Verizon and AT&T and the smaller companies continues to be wide, forcing Sprint and T-Mobile to focus on competitive plans and innovative offerings.
Verizon has repeatedly used a map in television advertisements to compare itself favorably to AT&T in terms of network coverage — and now it has additional outside recognition to back it up.
Verizon retained its ranking as the best wireless network in the United States in the second half of last year, with AT&T again ending up as the runner up, according to the latest report by RootMetrics on mobile network performance, as reported by Forbes.
RootMetrics used mobile performance data from the consumer’s perspective, conducting 5.7 million tests and covering 288,165 miles for the report. Verizon led AT&T in many categories, including network reliability and call performance. The corporation scored a 93.9 out of 100 on the report, a 2.2 lead over AT&T.
Verizon didn’t do so well in text performance, coming in behind AT&T slightly.
The report shows that the mobile market is still a two-horse race between Verizon and AT&T, which are pacing smaller companies like T-Mobile and Sprint in terms of network performance. However, both of those companies show improved in their performance compared to the first half of 2014 — although they are still a distant third and fourth in the latest report, hovering in the mid-80s.
The report was good news for Sprint, as it was able to leapfrog T-Mobile to the third spot. The company completed its Network Vision upgrade, and is seeing a turnaround in its bottom line ever since it focused on making innovative offerings and driving prices down to make itself more competitive.
With such a difference in network performance between the two big dogs and companies like Sprint, the company is forced to lure buyers with better data plans and pricing, while AT&T and Verizon can focus on maintain their market leadership on network quality and data speeds.
