Between Fifty Shades of Grey, Furious 7, Pitch Perfect 2, Jurassic World, and Ted 2, Universal already boasted one of the most highly-anticipated film lineups of 2015, and the studio just gave horror fans something to look forward to late Thursday night. Audiences of Fifty Shades’ midnight release were surprised with the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Halloween horror film Crimson Peak, and fans of the award-winning producer’s 2013 Mama are rejoicing that the film will be another terrifying collaboration with the hit horror film’s star Jessica Chastain.
Crimson Peak stars Tom Hiddleston as a mysterious 19th century gentleman who romances and marries a young author played by Mia Wasikowska. Hiddleston’s character takes his new bride to the frightening, rot-infested mansion he used to call home, and she soon finds out that he isn’t quite the charming man she thought she married. Chastain portrays Hiddleston’s evidently emotionally-scarred sister, and Charlie Hunnam – who turned down the leading role in Universal’s Fifty Shades of Grey – also stars in the film.
Guillermo del Toro became an instant fan-favorite among horror fans after serving as executive producer on 2013’s Mama, which earned $28.4 million on its opening weekend, and debuted at No. 1 in the box office. He ventured outside of his typical B-movie aesthetic in the massively successful 2013 action film Pacific Rim, but his frequently expressed desire to make a grand-scale horror film akin to classics such as The Exorcist and The Omen should assure fans that he’s planning on returning to his roots to make their skin crawl in Crimson Peak. Another good sign is that the film has already earned an “R” rating for “bloody violence, some sexual content and brief strong language.”
The film is scheduled to release on Oct. 16, the same date as Sony’s Goosebumps, and a week before Paramount’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.
