Drake surprised fans with a 17 song album release last night entitled If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, but he has now confirmed that it was actually a mixtape and not an official album. Some fans suspected so prior to any official statements, but he cleared things up by posting a photo to Instagram with the caption “How’s my mixtape?”.
There is plenty of other speculation to go along with the mixtape besides its technical origins. Drake’s mixtape made an obvious diss at fellow rapper Tyga, which was a response to Tyga calling Drake a fake in a Vibe interview a couple months back. Drake mentions both the publication and makes reference to Tyga’s alleged girlfriend, underaged 17 year-old Kylie Jenner.
“I heard a lil lil homie talking reckless in Vibe / Quite a platform you chose, you shoulda kept it inside / Oh you tried, it’s so childish calling my name on the world stage. You need to act your age and not your girl’s age,” he rapped.
Tyga responded via Twitter and then proceeded to delete his tweet.
Drake also allegedly made reference to another fellow musical artist on the album, rumored ex girlfriend Rihanna. In the song You & the 6 Drake discusses talking to his mom about his dating life.
“She said ‘I heard you back with you know who’ / I told her ‘Girl I’m always back with you know who.'”
Drake has reportedly had an on and off again relationship with Rihanna since 2009. The duo was most recently suspected of dating over the summer of 2014 and took turns meeting up on tour, but then they split once again for unconfirmed reasons. Rihanna has most recently been linked to movie star Leonardo DiCaprio.
Billboard has reported that the mixtape is projected to sell somewhere around 400,000 copies. His fourth studio album Views From the 6 is still anticipated.
