Uma Thurman’s NBC mini-series The Slap premieres on Thursday evening, but all the 44-year-old actress’ fans can talk about is whether or not she’s gone under the knife. Thurman debuted a bizarre new look at the red carpet premiere for the mini-series on Monday, and her pronounced eyebrows and cheekbones caused onlookers to say that she was “unrecognizable” and Thurman herself to admit that she “looked weird.”
The Pulp Fiction alum stepped onto the red carpet at New York’s New Museum on Monday with a make-up makeover that seemed to lift her entire face, bringing attention to her eyebrows, cheekbones, and mascara-free eyelashes. Her longtime makeup artist Tony Surratt told Refinery29 that the look was meant look “more editorial than it was celebrity,” and that the strong brow and bold lip he pronounced were meant to invoke “a French sort of feel.”
“I applied a creamy foundation for all-over glow, and then contoured the hairline and her cheekbones, adding warmth. I applied the lip … and then we just kept the eyes really, really light,” said Surratt. “The way I shaded her eyebrows with the pencil, I created an uplifting effect.”
Surratt then finished Thurman’s make-up with a beige shadow on the actress’ lids, and left off the mascara as a “reaction against all the fake lashes we’ve been seeing on the red carpet.”
The look caused rumors to circulate that Thurman went under the knife, but Thurman immediately shot those down during her appearance on Today on Thursday.
“I know I looked weird! I don’t know, I guess nobody liked my makeup, you know,” Thurman told Savannah Guthrie. “I’ve been doing this for years and years and years and people say things nice and they say things mean and it’s just like whatever. You take the good with the bad.”
