Stewart announced on Tuesday that he'd be leaving his hosting job after 16 years.
The uncertainty may be over soon. On Tuesday Jon Stewart shocked the nation by announcing his retirement from The Daily Show later this year, leaving many fans worried about the future of the beloved “fake news” show. Only a day later, though, Comedy Central company executive Doug Herzog promised that not only would the show go on but also there was already a “short list” of replacement hosts.
According to the New York Daily News, Herzog, president of the Viacom Entertainment Group, reported he and Stewart were consulting on the date for Stewart’s last show. Herzog also claimed that whether or not Stewart would continue on in his role as executive producer was still “TBD,’ or to be determined. Stewart’s company Busboy Productions continues to produce The Larry Wilmore Show, which took Stephen Colbert’s time slot.
Herzog refused to actually name names on the list but shot down the popular speculation that John Oliver was a candidate. Oliver famously filled Stewart’s shoes in May of 2013 while Stewart was filming his directorial debut Rosewater. However, he now hosts his own show on HBO and when asked Herzog commented that Oliver was “spoken for.”
Stewart is actually the second host of The Daily Show, having replaced original star Craig Kilborn after 3 seasons, and Herzog for one is convinced he is not the last. He said that The Daily Show was a “format that is built to last, and last it will.”
With Oliver ruled out, rumored candidates include current show correspondents Samantha Bee and Jessica Williams. Stewart has yet to comment on any casting rumors.
