Actor Emile Hirsch charged with aggravated assault

Actor Emile Hirsch was charged with aggravated assault after he reportedly choked a woman during the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, officials said Thursday. The incident occurred in Park City at Tao Nightclub on Jan. 25.

The Summit County Attorney’s Office said that Hirsch allegedly put a female studio executive in a chokehold. The 29-year-old actor, best known for his roles in “Lone Survivor” and “Into the Wild,” was also charged with misdemeanor intoxication, according to NBC News. The prosecutor, Ryan Stack, confirmed that the victim was Paramount Pictures’ Daniele Bernfeld. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she is the vice president of Paramount Digital Entertainment and Insure Pictures.

A criminal complaint described Hirsch as drunk. He apparently called Bernfeld a “rich kid” and told her she did not fit in at the film festival. He proceeded to grab her, and she pushed him away, according to Associated Press.

Court documents revealed that Hirsch put her in a chokehold from behind, pulled her onto a table and jumped on top of her. Bernfeld said that she was close to or did lose consciousness. CNN reported that two witnesses pulled him off of her. They said that she “couldn’t breathe” and there was some “redness” around her neck.

Hirsch admitted to getting into an argument with Bernfeld, but he did not know her personally. He also admitted that he was intoxicated at the time of the altercation, and officers agreed that he was showing signs of intoxication, according to LA Times.

Hirsch’s first court date is set for March 16. If he is convicted of aggravated assault he is facing a $5,000 fine and up to five years in jail.

Hirsch was at the Sundance Film Festival for the premiere of “Ten Thousands Saints” in which he has a leading role along with Ethan Hawke. Representatives for both Hirsch and Paramount Pictures have yet to respond to the charges or the altercation.
