The companies announced a partnership for the character on Monday.
Did Spider-Man just get a little more amazing? Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced on Monday that they would be combining superpowers to share Spider-Man’s big screen adventures.
As Marvel.com reports, Spider-Man has been a character within the Marvel universe for over 50 years, leading many fans to wonder if the film worlds would ever be combined. Spider-Man has belonged exclusively to Sony for 13 years, where he has amassed a $4 billion empire. However, his last screen venture, last summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, underperformed in theatres, and Sony is still trying to recover from its PR nightmare of the cyber-hack of its company last fall.
Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of Marvel’s partner The Walt Disney Company, said on Monday that, “we’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.” The storytelling will begin quickly, as Spider-Man is now set to make an appearance in an upcoming Marvel film, rumored by Marketwatch to be 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
Marvel and Sony also announced plans for the next installment of Spider-Man with a scheduled 2017 release. The as-yet untitled film will be co-produced by Marvel CEO Kevin Feig and Sony’s Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise during her role as co-chairman of the company and who is moving to a new producing role. Sony continues to own the rights to Spider-Man and will continue to finance, distribute, and have final creative control over the character.
Marvel also indicated that beloved Marvel characters are now free to appear in Spider-Man films.
