Andrew Garfield to be replaced as Spider-Man as character enters Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel Studios’ civil war with Sony Entertainment over the film rights to iconic superhero Spider-Man has finally come to an end, just in time for the webslinger to appear in the highly-anticipated film Captain America: Civil War. While fans have been expressing their excitement over the addition of Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Marvel revealed the news on Monday, some may soon change their tune now that sources are stating Andrew Garfield will not reprise the role of Peter Parker, and the character will thus be receiving yet another reboot treatment.

Since Spider-Man was an essential part of Marvel’s universe-changing Civil War comic book storyline, the media and comic fans alike assumed last year that the studio’s upcoming Civil War film would somehow include the superhero, despite the widely-publicized rights issues presented by Sony. The Sony hack proved that Michael De Luca, co-president of production for Columbia Pictures, and Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, discussed the possibility of Peter Parker’s involvement in the third Captain America last October, and Marvel announced on Monday that they have finally reached an agreement. Following his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man will get his own new Marvel-approved, Sony-distributed reboot on Jul. 28, 2017.

Andrew Garfield, the 31-year-old actor who played Peter Parker and his wisecracking alter-ego in the two most recent Amazing Spider-Man films to mixed reviews from fans and critics, was reportedly considered to reprise the role. However, sources say that the studio ultimately decided that it didn’t make sense to keep him for this new chapter for his character. While this change will undoubtedly worry fans who approved of Garfield’s take on the fan-favorite superhero, De Luca and Marvel’s Kevin Feige are assuring fans that they will make sure the character is in good hands.

“I really feel, in my heart of hearts, that the new Spider-Man in Cap 3 could just appear in his own film, be it Sinister Six or a kick ass Spidey film of his own, after that intro in Cap 3 and people would be cool with it,” wrote De Luca.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Feige in the initial Sony-Marvel statement, noting that he’s been looking forward to this opportunity for as long as the fans have. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU.”

The addition of Spider-Man to the Marvel film universe unfortunately meant that the studio had to push back several of their upcoming films to make room. Thor: Ragnarok has been moved to Nov. 3, 2017, Black Panther will now release on Jul. 6, 2018, and Captain Marvel was reshuffled to Nov. 2, 2018. Team-up films Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2 will still, however, be released as planned in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
