He likely won’t be so lonely anymore. British singer-songwriter Sam Smith won most of the major Grammy Awards at their 57th ceremony on Sunday night, including Best New Artist.
As USA Today reported, Smith, 22, took home four significant trophies, not the least of them best pop vocal album for In the Lonely Hour. He also won Song of the Year and Record of the Year for his hit Stay With Me. Stay With Me has been in the news lately, as Smith and his song co-writers have agreed to give Tom Petty a songwriting credit for their work’s similarity to Petty’s song I Won’t Back Down.
As the LA Times revealed, Smith was a virtual unknown at the time of the Grammys last year. Now, his album has sold over 5 million copies worldwide, 2 million of them in the US, and he is playing venues such as Madison Square Garden. While accepting his pop vocal album award, Smith admitted, “Before this album, I tried everything to get my music heard. I tried losing weight and I was making terrible music. It wasn’t until I started being myself that people started to listen.”
Smith, the first openly gay musician to win Record of the Year, made sure to thank his inspiration for his melancholy album. “Thank you so much for breaking my heart,” he told the anonymous ex. “You got me four Grammys.”
Smith won all but one of his nominated categories, losing album of the year to Beck for his work Morning Phase. Despite not sweeping the night, Smith seemed quite satisfied, telling the audience, “This is the best night of my life.”
