Bruce Jenner accused of texting while driving during chain-reaction car crash

Investigators seek Jenner's phone records to determine if he or the other drivers in the deadly accident were texting while driving.

Bruce Jenner was involved in a car accident involving three vehicles on the Pacific Coast Highway on Saturday, and police are now trying to determine the cause of the deadly chain-reaction crash. Investigators are now asking the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star to release his cellphone records to authorities, and have stated that if they find one of the drivers involved in the crash committed a vehicle code violation, they could be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

The car accident occured when a Lexus slammed into a Prius which stopped on the Pacific Coast Highway near Corral Canyon Road in Malibu.

“Why it was stopped has yet to be determined,” Sgt. Philip Brooks of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Los Angeles Times. “If the light ahead was red and traffic backed up, then it’s hard to believe the Hummer would have come at a substantial speed, as it did.”

Jenner turned slightly right in his black Cadillac Escalade and rear-ended the Lexus, and the momentum from the impact and the direction of the tires sent the car into the path of a Hummer that was headed south at 50 mph.

Tire marks left on the road indicate that Jenner tried to brake before hitting the Lexus, but despite his apparent attempts to avoid collision, investigators are planning to visit the reality star to obtain his cellphone records. Brooks has stated that the records, which will also be obtained from the other drivers involved in the accident, will prove whether or not they were texting during the accident. This search may have been motivated by pictures provided to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department which appear to show Jenner holding either a cellphone or a cigarette at the time of the crash. According to the Associated Press, the former Olympian’s publicist has already stated that Jenner will provide the necessary records when asked.

Since the crash killed 69-year-old Kim Howe and led to five people getting injured, detectives plan to examine the vehicles, re-create the crash on paper, talk to witnesses and look through any photographs and video. If this probe reveals that one of the drivers committed a vehicle code violation at the time of the crash, charges such vehicular manslaughter are a possibility. California Department of Motor Vehicles revealed Sunday that Howe had not had a valid license since hers expired in 2007.

“My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident,” said Jenner in a statement released by his publicist on Sunday. “It is a devastating tragedy and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them. I will continue to cooperate in every way possible.”
