Diane Foley says that the U.S. government did “nothing” to save her son, James Foley or Kayla Mueller, the young woman that ISIS says was killed by a Jordanian airstrike last week. James Foley was the first of three Americans to be beheaded by ISIS, a murder recorded on video that was then spread through social media. According to the terrorist group, Mueller, 26, who is the last known U.S. hostage held by the Islamic State, was killed by a stray bomb from a Jordanian jet in an airstrike last week that was launched in retaliation for ISIS burning a Jordan fighter pilot alive.
Jordan has denied that Mueller was killed. No proof has been provided by ISIS of her death, and U.S. intelligence has been unable to confirm whether or not she is still alive.
Diane Foley said recently that Mueller and her son, along with other hostages, were held captive for nearly two years, and many opportunities were presented along the way, but nothing was done to save them. She said that the White House has failed the young Americans. Mrs. Foley cited times when the captors had reached out, offering an exchange of hostages for sensitive information.
Several rescue missions were launched to try and free ISIS hostages, but were unsuccessful. One such mission attempted to bring James Foley back just a few months before his death, but he had been moved by the time special forces arrived. Another rescue team was close to finding Mueller in July 2014. Mrs. Foley said that, while she applauds the courageous young soldiers who went on these missions, “it was much too late and the intelligence obviously was poor…they went in for nothing.”
Mrs. Foley has been outspoken about the government’s failures since her son’s death. In September she told CNN that she was “embarrassed and appalled” at the failed efforts at rescue. She went on to tell CNN that her son “was sacrificed because of a lack of communication and prioritization.”
Kayla Mueller’s parents are hoping that she is still alive, and have begged ISIS to contact them privately.
