A petition with over 40,000 signatures is circulating the internet in hopes of calling for a boycott of the “pornographic” and “exploitative” upcoming film 50 Shades of Grey, but isn’t stopping Target from trying to capitalize on the popularity of the bestselling BDSM series. The retailer has launched an entire line of 50 Shades-inspired merchandise, which includes massage oils, lubricants, and a couples blindfold set.
Author E.L. James, who wrote the bestselling 50 Shades novels, first entered the BDSM-product business by attending Wednesday’s product launch for London-based erotic boutique Coco de Mer’s “The Red Room Collection,” which was named after the series’ famed “red room of pain.” The collection includes items from the books such as naughty lingerie and bondage paraphernalia.
“Choose from this sophisticated range of 10 bespoke leather bondage pieces from the Fifty Shades of Grey Red Room Collection,” states the site’s product page. “Exquisitely crafted from the softest leather, with antique brass hardware and the Fifty Shades of Grey logo embossed on to each item. Each piece is presented in its own luxury branded dust bag, and comes with an embossed leather collection tag. Approved by E L James.”
Target’s “Official Pleasure Collection,” which also has James’ seal of approval, is slightly more tame. It features a “Yours and Mine Vibrating Silicone Love Ring,” oils and lubricants, and a blindfold set for couples to take turns “to sink into submission.” The adult sex toys can be purchased on the retailer’s website or in stores across the country, not too far from the children’s toys aisle.
Hot Topic has also tried to make money off of the controversial book series and upcoming film, and is selling tights with the Christian Grey’s signature sign off “Laters, baby” sewn on them. Vermont Teddy Bears is selling a “Christian Grey” bear; the bear wears a suit and carries mini handcuffs and a blindfold.
