Plus-sized swimsuit model featured in latest Sports Illustrated ad: ‘The world is ready’

Size-16 model Ashley Graham has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour and Vogue, and now the 27-year-old is making history for being the first plus-sized model to grace the pages of the iconic Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. In an ad for online retailer Swimsuits for All, Graham will be seen wearing a curve-hugging, black string bikini for the #CurvesinBikinis campaign.

In Graham’s Swimsuit Edition ad, the plus-size model flips her hair in her tight bikini, causing a man behind her to swoon so hard that he falls into a pool.

“I know my curves are sexy and I want everyone else to know that theirs are, too. There is no reason to hide and every reason to flaunt,” said Graham in a press release. “The world is ready for more curves in bikinis.”

Graham was discovered in a mall and started modeling at age 12. She has been a vocal advocate for women of all sizes throughout her career, and first made headlines after she criticized the media for considering Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence “curvy” in a recent interview.

“Jennifer Lawrence is the media’s poster girl for curves… she’s tiny,” complained Graham.

Swimsuits for All CEO Moshe Laniado revealed in a press release Wednesday that he hopes choosing Graham as the face of the company’s Sports Illustrated #CurvesinBikinis campaign will have a lasting impact on the industry.

“Tastes and body types change over time, and curves have never been more in,” said Laniado. “There is no better way to celebrate and show off than by donning a bikini. When the #CurvesinBikinis ad in Sports Illustrated is released, the world will be watching, and they’ll like what they see.”

“Finally, the industry is recognizing what many of us have always known,” Graham told Fashion Times. “Curves are sexy.”

The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue comes out on Feb. 9.
