Madonna premiered her new video, ‘Living for Love’ on picture-messaging app Snapchat yesterday, and in so doing made Internet history by being the first artist to debut a video on the site. In the video, the Material Girl struts her stuff as a lingerie-clad bullfighter.
Although Snapchat is only three years old, it boasts an impressive pedigree, with an estimated 200 million users and net worth of $10 billion. The app has been keen to release shareable music videos on their Snapchannel site, and Madonna is their first big ‘get.’
The new project is being well-received; Huffington Post writer Matthew Jacobs gives Madonna props for her latest release.
“Madonna presents herself as queen of the big top without relying on allusions to her own résumé to prove she is the master of the postmodern pop scene. She uses her ongoing prowess to vanquish the beasts who grunt and shove their way across her stage.
“This is the Madonna video we’ve waited a decade for, and it hails from what sounds like the makings of the Madonna album we’ve anticipated for just as long.”
Living for Love’ is featured on Madonna’s 13th studio album Rebel Heart, which is due to drop on March 10th.
The good reviews should come as a relief, as the rollout of Rebel Heart has been plagued with bad luck. Six tracks from the album were leaked in December, and Madonna herself came under harsh criticism after her team released images of prominent civil-rights figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi with black rope around their faces in the style of Madonna’s face on the Rebel Heart album cover.
Madonna will take the stage on Sunday at the 57th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, and will also perform Feb. 25 at the Brits Awards in London.
