The Orange is the New Black star will play a role on the series later in the spring.
The Mindy Project is set to continue its year of guest stars. The Daily Mail reports Laverne Cox will join the likes of Julia Stiles, Ken Burns, Ana Gasteyer, Chrissy Teigen, Yeardley Smith, Rhea Perlman, Lee Pace, and Shonda Rhimes by appearing on Fox’s comedy series later in the year.
The Mindy Project’s creator, writer, and star Mindy Kaling announced Cox’s appearance on Wednesday February 4. Cox is on tap to play the cousin of the show’s character Tamra, portrayed by actress Xosha Roquemore. The character will reportedly be on call to help Kaling’s OB/GYN character “get her confidence back.”
The news comes on the heel of the show’s game-changing episode on Tuesday night. SPOILER ALERT: Kaling’s character Mindy learned she was pregnant. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kaling spoke of her character’s upcoming transition, saying, “This is not a woman who rolls with discomfort and change very well….seeing an unwilling Mindy adjust to her growing body has been really fun to write.”
Presumably Cox, 30, will be on hand to help pregnant Mindy adjust, at least for one episode. Cox is one of the first openly transgender actresses in the country. She has appeared on Law and Order and Bored to Death but is best known for her Emmy-nominated work as Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black.
The list of guest stars isn’t done growing yet. Kaling teased E!Online by telling them, “we have a guest star coming up this spring that I think is the biggest, most exciting guest star we’ve ever hand, and I can’t say who it is.” Fans of the series will just have to say tuned.
