AMC launched a digitalĀ Better Call Saul comic book that addresses the history of Saul and Mike, and is a spinoff of a scene from Breaking Bad, Wednesday. The comic was released just before the two-night series premiere on AMC Sunday and Monday.
Illustrators collaborated with the writers of the show, just as they did for the Breaking Bad comic that was released prior to the final season, to create a story that would entertain existing fans and excite new fans. Along with digging into the history of Saul and Mike, the comic traces Mike’s investigation of a man who is thought to be Walter White. The comic even includes a pseudo-episode guide to help new readers, and potential viewers, understand the Breaking Bad references.
Mac McKean, senior vice president of AMC’s digital media and content, said that there is evidence that people want to view the content through comics. And this particular comic gives the writers and illustrators a chance to “unpack something” that leads viewers “directly into Better Call Saul.” Although the comic is not something viewers need to read before the show, McKean added that providing those extra layers is “appropriate” for “this type of show.”
Better Call Saul is the prequel to the Breaking Bad series that wrapped up in 2013. Saul Goodman was a secondary character on the show that offered some humor to counteract the intense main characters. He was an ethically devoid lawyer who often got himself into trouble and worked closely with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. The new AMC series delves into his back story.
The series opens with a black-and-white prologue illustrating a glimpse into Saul’s world after Walt’s death at the end of the Breaking Bad series. He is pictured managing a Cinnabon in Omaha with a new identity just as he said he would be in the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad. He is sitting, drinking alone, and looking back at his old life. This is where the series begins.
Although it is a prequel, the series can stand on its own. Viewers who are not familiar with Breaking Bad will not be lost, and Walter White fans are a step ahead on the outcome.
