The CW unveils Brandon Routh’s ‘technology-based’ Atom suit from ‘Arrow’

Comic book fans have been looking forward to seeing Justice League member The Atom ever since Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer was introduced on the CW’s hit show Arrow, and the network has finally given fans a glimpse of the hero’s costume. The network unveiled the first picture of the Atom costume on Tuesday, and announced that it will make its debut in episode 315, which airs on Feb. 25.

Routh’s Ray Palmer was introduced in Arrow’s third season as a billionaire tech genius who hopes to become a hero in honor of his fiancee, who was killed when Slade Wilson tried to take over Starling City at the end of last season.

“Ray’s the first technology-based hero that we’ve done. Our heroes, on ‘Arrow’ at least, tend to be very sort of fisticuff-oriented,” said executive producer Marc Guggenheim. “Ray is trying something brand new, also brand new for us too.”

While the CW did not state whether or not the suit of armor they unveiled on Tuesday will allow Palmer to change sizes like in the comics, Guggenheim stated that Palmer’s Atom suit will be both at the cutting edge of technology, both in the real world and on the show. He added that Palmer will quickly learn that a hero is much more than a person in a costume or high-tech suit.

“Part of the thing that we’re always trying to be true to is putting on a costume is the easy part. It’s being the hero that’s the really difficult part and one does not mean you’ve accomplished the other.”

The CW recently aired a massively successful two-part crossover with Arrow and its spinoff series The Flash, so it’s not surprising that the network is now planning to crossover Routh’s character onto The Flash. He and Emily Bett Rickards’ Felicity Smoak will visit Central City in episode 18 of The Flash, in an episode called “All Star Team-Up.”

“Ray Palmer is all about technology and STAR Labs is all about technology,” said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “We get to see Ray so happy to be in STAR Labs… With Cisco and Ray, they’re new best friends. The STAR Labs team is going to help Ray further his ATOM project.”
