The Islamic State has released a video purporting to show Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kassasbeh burned alive.
A new video released by ISIS purportedly shows 25-year-old Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kassasbeh being burned alive. al-Kassasbeh was captured by the Islamic State on Dec. 26, and his release has been the subject of extensive recent negotiations between his government and the militant group. Jordan had hoped to trade a female prisoner who was jailed in 2005 after a failed suicide bombing. If confirmed, the pilot’s death shows the failure of the proposed exchange.
The 22-minute, 34-second video first shows footage of Jordan’s role in the fight against the Islamic State. At the end of the video the captive al-Kassasbeh is shown standing inside a cage and burned alive by the fighters. The pilot was apparently soaked in accelerant. The video shows a line of fire approaching the pen where he is held, encircling him and consuming him. The pilot stands erect and defiant throughout.
This is the eighth video showing a hostage’s murder released by ISIS, although this is the first showing death by fire. The pilot’s death has been confirmed to his family by Jordan’s armed forces, who are working under the assumption that the images are real.
The month-long effort to negotiate the pilot’s release may have been in vain, as Jordan’s government now says that his murder occurred on Jan. 3. In the negotiations to try and gain his release officials in Amman sought proof that al-Kassasbeh was still alive before meeting with ISIS regarding the release of their prisoner.
Jordan is one of 60 countries involved in the coalition to fight ISIS, but its position is exceptionally vulnerable, with two of its borders, those with Iraq and Syria, occupied by the terrorist group. The Islamic State seeks to eventually control Jordan.
al-Kassasbeh’s release was part of negotiations for the release of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, who was beheaded last week.
