Former NFL star Warren Sapp arrested for hiring prostitutes

He found the wrong sort of dancing partner.   Former NFL player and past Dancing with the Stars contestant Warren Sapp was arrested Monday morning in Phoenix, AZ for soliciting a prostitute and assault.

TMZ broke the news that Sapp, 42, was arrested at 7 AM in a Phoenix hotel after two women contacted the police to report an altercation. Both women reportedly told police that they had gone with Sapp as “escorts” but the situation had turned into an argument over money. The women claim the argument became physical and the Phoenix police said they both presented with minor injuries consistent with a struggle.

The women were cited for their involvement but released. When questioned by police, Sapp allegedly admitted to soliciting the prostitutes but denied any assault or aggressive physical interaction.

Sapp, a former player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders, was in Phoenix to cover Super Bowl XLIX as an analyst for the NFL Network. He had been with the Network since 2008 but was fired on Monday after his arrest.

This is not Sapp’s first brush with the law. He was charged with domestic battery in 2010, though the charges were eventually dropped.   He has had numerous child support and financial difficulties with his ex-wife and was charged with domestic battery again in 2014.

TMZ reports that Sapp was released from jail on Tuesday afternoon on his own recognizance. He is forbidden from any contact with the victims but is allowed to leave the state and return home to Florida. He will be due back in court on February 23.
