Felicity Jones considered for lead in ‘Star Wars’ spinoff

Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones may take on the leading role in a new Star Wars spinoff project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A representative for Jones had no comment; Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to comment on the role.

Other actresses reportedly considered for the role include Eastern Promises actress Tatiana Maslany and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara. The Hollywood Reporter said that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will stand as director.

It was also said that Chris Weitz was hired this week to write a draft of the script. Weitz is reportedly replacing Gary Wheitta, who was responsible for the first draft. Sources also told The Hollywood Reporter that The Bourne Ultimatum star Edgar Ramirez is being considered for the male lead. According to The Wrap, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul is also being considered.

Plot details of the spinoff have not been released. However, the release date is set for Dec. 16, 2016, according to Variety. Josh Trank, Chronicle director, is also planning a stand-alone project set in the world of Star Wars, according to CBS News. It is unclear whether the film will affect the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which hits theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

Jones is no stranger to the film world. She broke out with her performance in Like Crazy. And afterward, she starred as Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the character who eventually became Black Cat in the Marvel Comic series.

Jones is currently shining in the spotlight with her recent Oscar nomination for best actress for her performance in The Theory of Everything. She portrays the wife of world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, Jane.

She also appeared in a film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, True Story, with Jonah Hill and James Franco recently. In addition, she is shooting the family fantasy A Monster Calls, directed by J.A. Bayona, that also stars Toby Kebbell and Liam Neeson.
