Michelle Obama says 'American Sniper' hits the mark.
The 2014 box office hit, American Sniper, got mixed reviews, not for its cinematic quality, but for the picture it paints of modern war. One patriot who gave it a thumbs-up, though, is the First Lady herself, Mrs. Michelle Obama.
While some critics say the movie glorifies murder and promotes war, Michelle Obama came to the film’s defense when she said, “While I know there have been critics, I felt that, more often than not, this film touches on many of the emotions and experiences that I’ve heard firsthand from military families over these past few years.”
Michelle Obama is also a spearhead on the initiative to urge Hollywood to create more accurate depictions of war. She joined Bradley Cooper, star of American Sniper, and other media heavyweights in Washington, D.C. to launch “6 Certified”, a cinematic badge of certification from the group, Got Your 6, that will tell a film audience that what they are viewing has been approved as an accurate depiction of war and veterans. Got Your 6 derived its name from the military slang phrase for “got your back”, and they’re focus is on closing the gap between civilians and military personnel, especially after they have returned after serving.
Chris Marvin, the managing director of Got Your 6 and a former U.S. Army officer, says this about the social view of veterans: “most Americans tell us that they only see veterans portrayed as broken or as heroes who walk on water in film and television…We’re missing something in the middle. Veterans are everyday people.” He says the “6 Certified” isn’t meant to show veterans in a good light, but simply in an honest one.
It’s this idea that sparked the formation of “6 Certified”, and that compelled Michelle Obama to defend the movie American Sniper.
