Snapchat ditches ‘Best Friends’ list, hides awkward moments

Snapchat is the latest social network on the scene, with the premise that users can share pictures and short videos with each other temporarily – as Snapchats disappear within 10 seconds after being sent. One of the features of the service was Best Friends list, which included the top three people that each user interacted with the most. This week, southern California-based Snapchat removed the Best Friends feature, giving users more anonymity and protection from suspicious significant others.

Awkward moments were common due to the list, especially when they may have involved innocent exchange of pictures and videos. Huffington Post Tech contributor Brian Hanley shared an anecdote about a female co-worker who is in a relationship and also had male friends. Of them happened to be among her Best Friends on Snapchat, and her boyfriend could view the list. “So her boyfriend knew, as the rest of her friends knew, that she was sending personalized pics to this random dude on the side,” Hanley wrote.

Aware that the boyfriend could get increasingly suspicious, Hanley’s colleague started sending “decoy Snapchats to her three girlfriends” to avoid having the guy show up in her Best Friends list, which can only include the the top three friends. The woman was “covering her tracks with content designed to do nothing more than overshadow other content,” Hanley wrote.

The Best Friends feature may not be gone forever. TechCrunch reported Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel tweeted on Jan. 27: “We’ll bring back BFs soon. A few higher-profile friends wanted to keep their usernames private – we’ll come up with a better way to do that.”
