Kickstarter has a new king, a campaign that has now been backed by more people than any projects in the history of the site. The funny part? The campaign is not raising money for a huge technology innovation, a band’s next album, or a movie. Rather, the funds will go toward bringing a quirky card game called “Exploding Kittens” to the mainstream.
According to a report from the Washington Post, the “Exploding Kittens” project has more backers than any other Kickstarter campaign has ever attained. As of Friday afternoon, roughly 124,000 people had pledged contributions to the project.
“Exploding Kittens” is described on Kickstarter as “a card game for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.” It comes from the mind of Matthew Inman, the creator of the comics and quiz site known as The Oatmeal. Inman has also published several popular books featuring his unique artwork and patent sense of humor, including How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You and The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances.
Gaming industry veterans Elan Lee and Shane Small are also bringing their talents to the project.
So far, the “Exploding Kittens” campaign has raised nearly $4.87 million. Both the tally of pledgers and the stack of cash grows with every refresh of the page, thanks to the near-unprecedented viral momentum that the campaign has enjoyed. The original fundraising goal? $10,000.
Though it has the Kickstarter record of most backers, “Exploding Kittens” is still not the most financially successful project in the history of the site. A high-tech cooler set the record this past summer, raising more than $13 million. Other extremely successful campaigns include the “The Veronica Mars Movie Project,” which netted $5.7 million in 2013.
The thing about “Exploding Cats,” though, is that the Kickstarter campaign still has 20 days left in which to raise funds. And since the project is only gathering steam in terms of sheer viral attention – especially now that it has set a new Kickstarter record – there is definitely a possibility that it could double or triple its funding numbers by the time pledging closes on February 19.
Interested parties wishing to pledge their support for the “Exploding Kittens” card game can do so on the campaign’s official Kickstarter page. A $20 pledge will buy a deck of cards for the new game. There is a video on the Kickstarter page that explains how the game will be played.
