It would not be Super Bowl week without a variety of stories about puppies hitting the news. The annual Puppy Bowl is rapidly approaching, the adorable dog only mimic of the traditional Super Bowl football game. This will be year 11 of the fun and things do not seem to be slowing down any time soon.

One rescue dog is having a Cinderella story this year, going from abandoned rescue dog to Puppy Bowl participant. The terrier named Keno was left at a shelter in Nevada, and while he was waiting for a new home the shelter workers took it upon themselves to enter him into the games. He was accepted after a round of interviews and is expected to play well amongst other dogs because he was raised alongside a cat, another dog, and a pot bellied pig.

In fact all of the dogs are chosen to participate in the Puppy Bowl are rescue dogs, which puts them at a great advantage for finding homes after appearing on the show. Animal Planet offers up extensive resources about adopting both dogs and cats related to the show and otherwise.

This year the Puppy Bowl is making a couple changes, one being that they are going to welcome Nigerian goats as cheerleaders from the sidelines. Five dwarf goats were selected for the honor, and they will reportedly be donning real cheerleading outfits. The Puppy Bowl referee Dan Schachner expressed some challenges they have faced thus far.

“If you’ve never tried to put a cheerleading outfit on a goat before, I recommend you try it. You will feel my pain,” he said.

Not to be left out of the fun, the car service Uber has teamed up with Animal Planet and added a puppy ordering option where they will be delivering dogs for 15 minutes of playtime. Each order requests a 30 dollar donation to a participating organization in each city. The cities involved include Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Seattle, Cleveland, Dallas, Baltimore, DC, and Atlanta.

Some towns are even throwing local Puppy Bowls of their own, including Phoenix with their Puppy Bowl Cafe. The cafe opens Jan. 29 and will offer a way to live watch the puppy games. The actual Puppy Bowl is recorded ahead of time and is not actually a live game at all, but this option provides live action for anyone who is interested.

Representatives of Discovery Communications reached out to the Arizona Humane Society to see if they would be willing to partake in the festivities and they obliged. Each dog will have a handler to ensure that everything runs smoothly, and all will be put up for adoption at the AHS Campus for Compassion in Phoenix. Normally those adoption fees would be $250, but Animal Planet might be waving them. Discovery will also be donating $15,000 to the shelter for their participation.

The Puppy Bowl airs this Sunday, Feb. 1, on Animal Planet at 3pm eastern.
