Sony has entered into a new partnership deal with Spotify that will bring the streaming service's extensive music library to all PlayStation devices.
Want to tweak the soundtrack for your video games? According to a recent report from PC Magazine, PlayStation gamers will soon have ample opportunity to do just that.
Indeed, Sony has entered into a new partnership deal with Spotify that will bring the streaming service’s extensive music library to all PlayStation devices. Spotify will supposedly integrate seamlessly with Sony’s PlayStation Network, allowing Sony users to easily play music on the go, or to even soundtrack their gaming experiences with customized playlists.
Sony already had a music integration system in place, called Music Unlimated, but the Spotify partnership thoroughly trumps it in every way. Spotify’s extensive library of “30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists” will give gamers new freedom when it comes to selecting music.
For instance, one player might desire a playlist of smooth soul classics for driving around the city in a Grand Theft Auto title, while another might seek out a beat-driven hip-hop album for a Madden football game. Either combination, as well as limitless other options, will be made available when Spotify links with the PlayStation Network this spring.
Sony’s Music Unlimited service, meanwhile, will be phased out in favor of the new Spotify-enabled PlayStation Music service. PlayStation users will even be able to set up and pay for a premium Spotify account through their PlayStation Network profile and PSN wallet.
The new Spotify integration will not just be meant for PlayStation console owners, either. On the contrary, Sony will also be bringing Spotify to PSN-connected Xperia smartphones and tablets. Video Unlimited, Sony’s movie and TV streaming service, will also soon be getting a rebrand, to PlayStation Video. Clearly, Sony wants to make the PlayStation brand name about more than just gaming.
However, for Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek, the appeal of this new partnership deal is all about the gaming. In a statement made as the big Sony partnership was announced, Ek shared his own personal excitement to utilize the new PlayStation Music feature.
“We are incredibly honored to partner with Sony and PlayStation to give gamers around the world an amazing experience wherever they listen to music,” Ek said. “As a gamer and PlayStation 4 user myself, I’m super excited to be able to soundtrack my FIFA 15 Arsenal matches later this spring.”
