SpecialNeedsWare, a company devoted to developing learning and therapy solutions through the realm of technology, has initiated TeachMate365 following an announcement this morning that they had acquired $3 million in Series A Funding, according to a press release.
TeachMate365 is an all-in-one platform that allows teachers to give individualized guidance to their students. The platform allows parents, instructors and therapists to work together and to distribute ideas and lessons throughout their school district and their communities. The program uses extensive tools that are research based in order to be successful in building academic skills as well as building life skills. Visual support aids, lessons, and student profiles can be synced across various devices so everyone working with the student is on the same page and the learning stays the same in all environments, whether it be at home or in the classroom.
Dr. Howard Shane is the head of the Autism Language Program and the Center for Communication Disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital. He was working with his team to publish information on a language method that is focused for children on the Autism spectrum. The Visual Immersion System that acknowledges the compelling visual processing skills of those with the disorder.
Jonathon Izak, the founder and CEO of the company, was driven to create software to help those with strong visual learning skills, but struggle in other areas, to create technology that aids in learning how to properly communicate, life skills, and other challenges with communication. Izak’s brother is Autistic, which was the inspiration for his foundation. He was working on developing AutisMate, a program that also focuses on the visual learning capacity of people on the spectrum.
The introduction of the educational platform TeachMate365 results from a combined effort during the past two years between Boston Children’s Research hospital’s start-up special education program and Harvard Medical School’s pediatric institute. Dr. Shane and Izak were acquainted with each other in 2012 at an assistive technology conference. The pair promptly realized the endless possibilities of combining their efforts and inserting the VIS technology into the technology of SpecialNeedsWare.
According to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section of SpecialNeedsWare website, the software is available for download through iPad, iPad mini, and iPad air devices with the compatibility to iPhone and android devices coming soon. The software uses visual stories, a series of images and text, in a language the user can understand to teach fundamental information. The app is cloud-based and allows users to sync the program up to 5 devices in order to stimulate consistency. TeachMate365 was mainly designed for school districts and larger organizations. The app allows directors and administrators to manage all of their licenses at SpecialNeedsWare through an online administrative portal.
The software will be formally introduced tomorrow, Jan. 28 in Orlando, Florida at Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference.
