Kia Motors has issued a recall for 86,880 Forte sedans sold in the U.S. to repair a faulty cooling fan resistor that has been linked to a number of engine fires. No on has died or injured, according to reports. The recall is the South Korean automaker’s second this year, this time affecting a different model in the lineup.
The recall was announced on the heels of documents filed by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Reuters reported. The agency has found that the cooling fan resistor was prone to overheating and melting, which then increased the likelyhood of sparking a fire.
Only 2014 model year Forte compact sedans are affected and the recall will begin Feb. 24, according to NHTSA. Forte owners will be able to come into their local Kia Motors dealerships to have the resistors and multifuse units replaced. Owners of the Forte sedans with 1.8-liter engines will have the engine control unit software updated,
Reuters reported.
Kia reported “several incidents of engine fires that could be linked to the resistor,” according to the NHTSA documents.
Kia has recently recalled nearly 100,000 Soul compact cars model years 2010-13 to fix a sunroof defect that may lead to a headliner plate deatching when the side curtain airbag deploys, according to Autoblog. The defect may lead to injury or death during a crash.
Owners of 2014 Fortes seeking additional information may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
