Rivera admits to only showering a few times a week, and apologizes for making comment that only white people feel the need to shower more than that.
Naya Rivera’s often-antagonistic character Santana Lopez is known for always speaking her mind on Glee, and it seems the 28-year-old actress similarly lacks a censor when it comes to personal hygiene. During her time as a guest host on Monday’s episode of The View, Rivera turned heads by admitting that she only showers a few times a week and claiming that showering more than that “is such a white people thing.”
During the first day of Rivera’s two-day stint as a guest host on The View, Nicolle Wallace made a comment that showers before and after each show, and then again before bed. Rivera chimed in that she thinks “white people shower a lot more than ethnic,” and that she doesn’t understand why some people shower every day.
“My mom is half black, half Puerto Rican. She showers every day, so I can say this. But I’m now married to a white man,” she said, referring to her longtime friend and fellow actor Ryan Dorsey, whom she married last summer. “And he showers a lot, like two, three times a day. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?'”
Rivera went on to explain that she only showers once or twice every three days, since a dermatologist in a recent study said that was the recommended frequency.
While her comment about the tendency of white people to shower more than people of other ethnic groups was meant to be a joke, it sparked a great deal of criticism online. Rivera apologized for the controversial remark on her Tuesday episode of The View.
“Yesterday we were talking about a study that says you’re supposed to shower once or twice every three days. I had an opinion on it that was supposed to be a joke. Apparently it didn’t go over so well,” said Rivera. “It was supposed to be a joke, but I apologize if anyone was offended.”
