The funnyman is lending a producing credit, helping to expand the audience of the new miniseries sequel to Carl Sagan's popular science series.
Show creator and producer Seth McFarlane is joining forces with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to produce a sequel to Carl Sagan’s science television series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage,” reports USA Today.
The “Family Guy” creator joined production of the 13-part miniseries after it was already being pitched to PBS and Discovery by host Tyson and Sagan’s widow, Ann Druyan. McFarlane argued that in pitching to these television channels, Tyson and Druyan were “speaking to the converted.”
McFarlane arranged a meeting with Fox, believing that the show would reach a broader audience there. He had always been a fan of Sagan’s science series and wanted to expand its breadth the second time around. “I had seen it as a child,” said McFarlane. “Then when I was in high school saw it again and was able to process [the show] in much more depth.”
Tyson was at first skeptical of meeting with producers at Fox. “By the second or third meetings, it was clear that they were on board,” shared the scientist and host. “It became clear that they were interested in ‘Cosmos’ regardless of whether Seth had sat there making the presentation with us.”
“I get myself involved with shows and people that I’m enthusiastic about,” added MacFarlane.
The comedian and producer has also created “Family Guy,” “American Dad” and “Dads” for Fox.
The “Cosmos” sequel, titled “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” will air on both the Fox and National Geographic channels on March 9 and March 10, respectively.
