Google VP Megan Smith is the top candidate to become the new U.S. Chief Technology Officer (CTO), sources close to the matter told Bloomberg.
The CTO essentially serves as the White House’s “Chief Nerd,” overseeing the government’s use of technology and finding ways to use technology create jobs and do things like increase the use of broadband nationwide.
During her 11-year tenure at Google, Smith helped develop some of the company’s flagship projects. As VP of Business Development, she led the acquisitions of of Keyhole and Where2Tech, which jump-started Google Earth and Google Maps, ITPro reports.
Todd Park, the departing CTO, is best known for spearheading the White House’s efforts to fix the government’s healthcare portal after the botched rollout in October 2013. He also launched the Presidential Innovation Fellows program,which fosters partnerships between public and private officials on special projects, and helped open up more government data to the public.
Park now heads to Silicon Valley, to serve as President Obama’s “Technology Advisor.” His duties there will include recruiting top tech talent into government.
“I thank Todd for his service as my Chief Technology Officer, and look forward to his continuing to help us deploy the best people and ideas from the tech community in service of the American people,” said President Obama in a statement.
According to Bloomberg, both Google and the White House have declined to comment on Smith’s status.
