Supporters of Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson have raised $100,000 more for his support than has been raised in support of the family of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old victim Wilson shot and killed on August 9 in Ferguson, Mo.
As supporters of Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson gathered for a Saturday afternoon rally, online fundraisers for his support surpassed the amount of money raised for the family of his 18-year-old victim, Michael Brown, reports USA Today.
A crowd-funding page created for Wilson raised $235,010 from 5,902 people before organizers stopped accepting donations. The Wilson supporters had surpassed their goal of $100,000 in four days. A new fundraising page opened by the group already has $80,000.
The amount raised surpasses the $204,570 raised from 7,181 people in support of the Michael Brown Memorial Fund. The crowd-funding page was set up by Brown family lawyer Benjamin Crump on August 13.
“These funds will assist his family with costs that they will acquire as they seek justice on Michael’s behalf. These funds will not be used for legal fees; all funds will be given to the family of Michael Brown,” states the crowd-funding page.
Supporters of the white officer who shot and killed Brown, an African-American, in Ferguson, Mo. on August 9, gathered at Barney’s Sports Pub in south St. Louis on Saturday.
“Many of us have received death threats toward ourselves and our families,” said the speaker wearing sunglasses, paint beneath her eyes and a baseball cap. “We will not hide. We will no longer live in fear… If you support Darren Wilson, make your voices heard.”
The media has shown a strong bias against Wilson supporters, said the speaker. The remarks drew loud applause from the crowd.
She refused to give her name to the media. “You want my name? I am Darren Wilson. We are Darren Wilson,” she said.
A friend of the Brown family has started a separate fundraising page for donations specifically to younger siblings of Michael Brown. The page states the funds will be used “for physiological services and care expenses” for the three younger siblings of the deceased young man.
