Founder of McAfee Antivirus rants against smartphones and Google

McAfee blamed the proliferation of smartphone spying on American consumers’ refusal to read user agreements.

At Def Con, an info security and hacker conference in Las Vegas, the one-time creator of McAfee antivirus software, John McAfee, made a surprise speech, warning that smartphones are spying on American consumers and calling on hackers to “make a stand” against companies like Google that seek highly personal information.

According to the Wall Street Journal, McAfee blamed the proliferation of smartphone spying on American consumers’ refusal to read user agreements. “The most promising privacy thing is stupid phones,” he said. “I’m dumping all my smart phones.”

While possibly best known for his antivirus software, McAffee has led a colorful life, straddling the line between a spy thriller and a drug-induced paranoid fantasy. In 2012, the BBC reports, McAfee was accused of murdering his neighbour while living in Belize. He fled the country and denies the charges. According to TechCrunch, McAffee claims he now lives on the run, half-deaf from an attempt on his life from a 17-year-old ex-lover, and dodging assassination attempts from a drug cartel.

McAffee touched on some of these international misadventures in his surprise remarks at Def Con, mentioning death threats from people in Belize, smoking marijuana while listening to a Bible recording, and the age of consent, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“If you have enough experience with psychoactive chemicals, you understand that whether I imagine it or experience it is ultimately inconsequential,” said McAffee.
