Motorola will be the second of Apple's major competitors to come out with a smartwatch, after Samsung launched the "Galaxy Gear" last fall.
Where the heck is the Apple iWatch? That question has been on the minds of many consumers lately, as Motorola prepares to launch its own shot for smartwatch market dominance, the Moto 360, sometime before the end of the year. And according to a report from Apple Insider, blogger and writer John Gruber may have the answer to that question.
Gruber has shown a history of correctly guessing insider Apple information in the past, leading many to refer to the writer as a “well-connected Apple blogger,” or something to that effect. So when Gruber wrote a short blog post, responding to a Verge article that had discussed the Moto 360 and its core features, people immediately paid attention.
“It looks like Motorola’s designers tried to draw as much attention as they could to the 360’s stupid flat tire display shape,” Gruber wrote on his blog. “The only way this could get funnier would be if it doesn’t even ship until after Apple announces their wrist wearable thing next month.”
Of course, a translator was not needed to determine that Gruber was talking about the so-called iWatch, which many have been expecting Apple to announce all year. After all, Motorola will be the second of Apple’s major competitors to come out with a smartwatch, after Samsung launched the “Galaxy Gear” last fall. The implication of Gruber’s post was that, once Apple launches an iWatch, all other competitors will be revealed as pretenders to the throne, just as early MP3 players fell when Apple launched the iPod over a decade ago.
But Gruber says some people have read too much into his comments. Indeed, many took his “next month” comment literally, and started wondering if Gruber had inside information on when the iWatch could be hitting the market. He says he does not, and that he was merely making a joke with that particular comment.
Still, Gruber might not be far off. Original projections pointed to September as when Apple would be sending the iWatch into mass manufacture, and while production difficulties have supposedly delayed the process a bit, it is still likely that Apple’s smartwatch will be out in time for the holidays – a similar timeline to the Moto 360.
