Beware: App for changing Facebook profile color is malware

The program manifests itself as a Facebook application, a fact that further convinces many users that it is, in fact, genuine and supported by Facebook.

Want to change the color of your Facebook page? You are not alone.

In fact, according to a recent Tech Times article, 10,000 people around the world have been infected by a malware application that hooks Facebook users by telling them it can shift the color schemes of their Facebook profiles. The program manifests itself as a Facebook application, a fact that further convinces many users that it is, in fact, genuine and supported by Facebook.

To avoid the problem, Facebookers should be on the lookout for one of the two ways in which the program can launch an attack. When users visit the site for the purported “color change” software, they will be asked to watch a tutorial video on how to customize their Facebook page. This video is actually designed to steal what are called “Facebook Access Tokens,” which hackers can use to essentially take over your Facebook profile and network with your friends – with the obvious goal of getting more users to fall into the same trap.

The program can also take hold through a malicious application download. If you are a using a PC, this download takes the form of an invasive, pornographic video player. If you are using an Android tablet or smartphone, on the other hand, the program will use a classic malware hoax to hit you: informing you that your system has been infected and that the device must download an app to find the virus and solve the problem.

Once installed, the malware can essentially take over your Facebook apps, embedding them with viruses and other malicious code, and using apps to redirect you toward phishing sites where your personal data will be harvested. Luckily, you can counter the app part of the problem by simply going to Facebook’s app page an uninstalling the color change program. You can also disable all of your applications to keep the issue from ever coming back. Just be sure to change your password, as well.

But while these solutions are, thankfully, out there, the easiest way to avoid this problem is to simply not be hoodwinked by any program that says it can change the color of your Facebook profile. Facebook is not Myspace, and users should know that no method currently exists to customize a profile page with new “skins” or colors.
