Google sells off one of its mystery barges

It looks like Google may be jumping ship on the floating showroom idea.

Last fall, Google caught the attention of the public and the media alike when it was discovered that the global tech company was the owner of numerous mysterious barges that were appearing around the country. The massive boats, which cropped up in San Francisco and Stockton, California, as well as on the east coast in the cities of Portland, Maine and New London, Connecticut, drew massive speculation before Google explained that they were meant to be floating (and potentially, traveling) tech showrooms, not unlike what Apple has with its retail stores.

Now, though, it looks like Google may be jumping ship on the floating showroom idea. According to a report from Mercury News, Google confirmed Friday that it had sold at least one of the barges: the one in Portland, Maine. Meanwhile, Richard Aschieris, the port executive director in Stockton, California, was quoted as saying that nothing was ever done with the Stockton barge, and that “it just sits there like it did the day it arrived.”

Many believe that Google’s decision to sell the Portland barge (and to make no discernible use of the others) represents a change in course for the company’s marketing strategies, specifically in regard to the upcoming Google Glass computer headset. Although the Google barges were supposed to function as traveling showrooms for all of Google’s products, ideas, and technologies, the way their arrival coincided with a flurry of buzz for the Google Glass likely offered a deeper explanation about which Google product they would specifically be used to sell.

In addition, Google’s vague, noncommittal explanations about the barges would make sense in light of the company’s equally vague and noncommittal plans for the Glass. The product was supposed to make its way to the mainstream market in 2014, but here we are in August, and no release date has been announced. In fact, Google co-founder Sergey Brin has said that he is “not sure” whether or not the Glass will be seeing the light of day this year.

Perhaps the delays in the release of the Glass and the decision to sell at least one of the Google barges are connected.
