Microsoft has been looking to break in to the Chinese market for awhile now.
The Xbox One is about to make its debut in China.
According to a report from Reuters, a massive Chinese e-commerce company called JD.com Inc. is now accepting preorders for Microsoft’s current Xbox One gaming console. The firm announced the pre-sales plan today, stating that it would be accepting orders starting Monday, July 28, and cutting them off after Wednesday, July 30. That gives Chinese gamers a three-day window to secure themselves an Xbox One unit.
Not that “Chinese gamers” is a huge subset of the consumer population. Despite China’s relative proximity to Japan, perhaps the gaming world’s most thriving epicenter, China is not known for video games. In fact, the government has maintained a strict ban on gaming consoles in the country since 2000, believing video games had an adverse effect on mental health. Since Microsoft’s original Xbox released in the United States in 2001, JD.com’s decision to sell the Xbox One will mark the first time one of Microsoft’s gaming consoles has secured any sort of foothold in the most populous nation on Earth.
Microsoft has been looking to break into the Chinese market for awhile now. Last fall, the Washington-based company started talking with BestTV New Media Co Ltd, a Chinese manufacturer of internet and TV boxes, about forming a partnership. Now, Microsoft is supposedly working with BestTV to manufacture Xbox One consoles in Shanghai, with companies like JD.com and China Telecom, a small wireless carrier in the country, distributing those consoles among mainland consumers.
Undoubtedly, Microsoft’s play for the untapped gaming market in China is an effort to fight back against Sony. Since the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 were released last fall, the PS4 has taken the lead in sales. If the Xbox One manages to take off in China, it could help Microsoft take back the high ground.
