The two smartphones run on Android Jelly Bean and cost around $300, but diverge in screen-size, number of cameras and processing power.
There are dozens of Android smartphones flooding the market, but the Sony Xperia M2 and Samsung Galaxy S4 and its sibling S4 mini are in the upper echelon thanks to strong brand recognition, features and affordability. That said, which phone is ultimately superior?
The main differentiating factors between the two smartphones – both of which run on Android Jelly Bean – are screen size and processing power. The Xperia has a 4.80-inch TFT screen compared to S4 Mini’s 4.3-inch Super AMOLED. Resolution is identical and the smaller S4 weighs 40 grams less than the Xperia, as expected.
In terms of sheer power, the Galaxy S4 Mini pulls ahead thanks to its 1.7 GHz Qualcomm MSM8930 Snapdragon 400 2-core chip. The Xperia is powered by a 1.2 GHz MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 4-core processor.
Both the Xperia and the Galaxy S4 Mini have internal 8 GB memory. Xperia’s can be expanded to 32 GB with a MicroSD card while Samsung can accommodate a 64 GB card. Galaxy also has slightly more internal memory, 1.5 GB, than Xperia, which has 1 GB.
The smartphones are virtually indistinguishable in terms of their cameras on the back of the phone; both are equipped with 8MP resolution cameras with LED flash and autofocus. However, the S4 Mini packs a second, front-facing 1.9MP resolution camera that is incredibly useful for video conferencing (not to mention selfies).
The Sony phone comes with the longer-lasting battery – and it’s not even close. The 2300 mAh Xperia M2 battery is good for 14 hours of talk time and 58 hours of music streaming, while the 1900 mAh S4 Mini battery is good for 12 hours talk time and 45 hours of music.
Both smartphones are selling for around $300 on eBay, so the choice really comes down to brand preference and features.
