The percentage of Chinese Internet users accessing the Internet via mobile grew to 83.4 percent as of June 2014.
As its overall growth of Internet access sagged, China saw the number of people accessing the Internet through a mobile device finally overtake the number of those accessing through a desktop or laptop PC.
The percentage of Chinese Internet users accessing the Internet via mobile grew to 83.4 percent as of June 2014, while the percentage of those accessing the internet via PCs declined slightly to 80.9 percent. According to The Next Web, the figure for mobile internet access is up 2.4 percent in just six months. Desktop computer and laptop usage, on the other hand, both fell by 0.1 percent and 0.4 percent respectively.
These statistics are courtesy of the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), who recently released their biannual report on Internet usage in China.
China’s total number of internet users rose 2.3 percent to 632 million at the end of June, from 618 million at the end of 2013. The country had only 94 million Internet users a decade ago. Still, the report provides evidence that this explosive growth is finally slowing. China added only 14.4 million new Internet users in the first half of 2014, the lowest half-year growth in eight years, according to PC world.
Despite these huge raw numbers, China’s total internet penetration rate stands at only 46.9 percent, meaning that only 46.9 percent of its massive population has Internet access. This number is up just 1.1 percent from the end of 2013. For comparison, Internet penetration in the U.S. stands at 87 percent, PC World reports.
