Facebook Mentions is only available through iOS for now.
This week Facebook unveiled a new app that can only be used by “influencers” who have been verified by the social network. In other words, famous people.
Launched Thursday, Facebook Mentions is the social network’s latest effort to woo celebrities from other platforms like Reddit and Twitter. It seeks to help celebrities manage their public Facebook pages and to streamline interactions with fans.
“From cheering on World Cup players to checking out updates from favorite celebrities, there are more than a billion interactions between public figures and their fans on Facebook every week,” said Facebook Product Manager Allison Swope in a blog post. “We want to make these interactions even better.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook hopes that Mentions will allow public figures to more effectively manage their Facebook account by making it easier to see posts that mention them, and that the dedicated app will facilitate more interaction between celebrities and their fans. Similar to the newsfeed that regular old Facebook users see upon login, Facebook Mentions shows a timeline of posts that reference the user. The Mentions timeline also displays trending topics, so users can engage in popular conversations. Additionally, celebrities can create posts and host interactive sessions like live Q&A’s with the app.
Facebook Mentions is only available through iOS for now. While anyone may download it, individuals have to request access before they can use it. And unless the account has the coveted “verified” status, people hoping to use the app will be out of luck. However, users can request that their account be verified through the app as well.
