The boost in sales came largely from a promotional bundle that Sony scored with the blockbuster release of Grand Theft Auto V.
The sun may be setting on the current console generation, with new systems on the way in the coming months from both Microsoft (the Xbox One) and Sony (the Playstation 4), but that doesn’t mean competition has ceased among the current market crop of video gaming hardware. According to a new report from ComputerAndVideoGames.com, the Playstation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 in September for the first time in 32 months, a late victory for the console, but a victory nonetheless.
The boost in sales came largely from a promotional bundle that Sony scored with the blockbuster release of Grand Theft Auto V, which hit stores on September 17. The bundle included one of Sony’s new “Super Slim” models of the Playstation 3, as well as the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto franchise sequel.
The move was a smart one on Sony’s end, especially considering the highly in-demand nature of Grand Theft Auto V, which many have speculated will be the last big video game release to hit the current generation of consoles. The Xbox 360 has been on the market since the fall of 2005, while the PS3 hit shelves in time for the holiday season a year later. Needless to say, both consoles have been occupying real estate on gamers’ shelves for a long time now, and Grand Theft Auto V has certainly proven a good way for the consoles to bid farewell.
Still, gamers haven’t moved on to the next round of consoles just yet. While the Playstation 4 will arrive on the market in less than a month – on November 15 – and while the Xbox 360 will arrive a mere week later, plenty of video game enthusiasts still came out of the woodwork to purchase the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions of Grand Theft Auto V.
Rockstar Games, the developer behind GTA V, notched over $1 billion in sales during the first three days of the game’s release. Furthermore, the game represented a whopping 52 percent of game sales during the month of September, helping to reignite the gaming market with a 27 percent boost. Gaming sales have been understandably slow for much of this year, as new content has begun to dry up for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 in anticipation of their successors.
The PS3’s September victory, therefore, comes at a time when gaming hardware units are less in-demand than they have been in years. Still, since this is the first time since January 2011 that the PS3 has bested the Xbox 360, it might be just the boost in morale that Sony needs to come out guns blazing with the PS4. Sony was once the dominating force in video games (specifically with the PS2), but has been unable to beat the Xbox 360 thanks to Microsoft’s year-long head start.
