University of Florida slams doors shut on frat over alleged abuse of wounded vets

The students are accused or urinating on American flags, vomiting off balconies, and hurling abuse at disabled vets who were there to be honored.

The University of Florida has closed the doors to a fraternity amid allegations that drunk members there spat on and insulted disabled veterans at a resort at Panama City Beach.

The doors of Zeta Beta Tau were officially closed a week after being placed on suspension immediately when their behavior came to light. Three were expelled, according to a Fox News report.

About 128 members called the fraternity’s Florida chapter home. The frat was founded in New York City back in 1898 primarily for Jewish students who had been banned from Greek organizations. The national organization agreed that the frat should be closed, with the national fraternity’s president saying that they were “absolutely disgusted” by the alleged actions of the chapter’s members.

The veterans had been in town for an annual treat meant to pay them honor for their service, but the frat intended to do the exact opposite during a social gathering nearby. Frat members were apparently intoxicated and were seen urinating on flags and vomiting from the balconies at the Laketown Wharf Resort.

The fraternity had been on probation for a hazing incident last fall.

Students from Emory University in Georgia were also there to attend their spring formals, although Emory officials say there is no evidence that their students were involved in the behavior.

University of Florida President Kent Fuchs said in a statement that he was “saddened and disappointed by the reported mistreatment and disrespect of our military veterans,” adding that the university has “always honored, and will always honor, the service of veterans.”

The school announced earlier it would charge the frat with obscene behavior, public intoxication, causing damage to property, and theft.
